May family trip by bike

Pure spring happiness

The latest instalment of my Eindhoven calendar series!

I was stuck for a long time for the May painting, not knowing what to do. Finally my friend Indre reminded me that May in the Netherlands means a lot of holidays. There’s the long Ascension Day weekend, and usually also Pentecost, and school kids get two weeks off for what’s called the meivakantie. So lots of opportunities to go on a little trip! Spring is in full swing with lots of blooming flowers.

Among the spring flowers, the dandelion is always, always my favourite. It’s the most pure, easygoing, down-to-earth flower, I think. Dandelions aren’t difficult about the environment, they will grow anywhere!

Dandelions are affordable happiness for anyone, at any moment. To me, they really represent the pure happiness of spring. So I imaged a family going on a little day trip, carrying everything they need for the day on their bikes, and stopping for a picnic in a dandelion field.
