Squeezable

Flexible, shapable, hard like steel and unbreakable

I discovered a miracle plant during our trip to Vietnam: the calabash tree. Native to Latin America and Africa, the dried-out fruit can be used to make bowls, cups or musical instruments like the berimbau.

A calabash tree grew outside of our balcony in Hoi An, and what caught my eye immediately was a fruit stuck between a branch of the tree and the wooden railing of the balcony, being squeezed into an odd shape like a balloon.

The irony! Here’s a fruit known for its extremely hard shell, which you need to saw open, and it’s being squeezed like mochi. I could just feel nature’s power!

What a perfect addition to my odd fruit collection, I thought. Let the painting remind us of the life philosophy to remain flexible, squeezable, shapable but hard like steel and unbreakable.
