Sounds Sweet

...with a hint of bitterness

A few weeks ago, we got to enjoy something we hadn’t done in a while: go to a concert! With, you know, other people.

My good friend Indre drew our attention to the “So, what’s next?” festival, a night of jazz at the Eindhoven music hall.

The main act were the Metropole Orchestra, José James, Gaidaa and Nana Adjoa.

Especially Nana Adjoa found a way into my heart and into my ear.

I found her voice so sweet and comforting, especially together with the jazzy, big band sound of the Metropole Orchestra. It was soothing and really went deep into my heart.

When I was looking for a way to express this in a painting, I was thinking of what this voice and sound might taste like. Maple syrup, honey, or perhaps caramel? In the end, I chose caramel. It’s not too sweet, with a hint of bitterness and other flavours.

The concert was at the end October, days are getting shorter and autumn has arrived, so I chose earthy tones for this painting.

BEHIND THE SCENES...

Something a bit old, but the ideas are still new
