A Berlin world of wonders
The house of our friend Till in Berlin is a real treasure. Already when I first visited some years ago, I was impressed. He’s a real collector of nice things and furniture. I was even more impressed when I learned that a lot of it had cost almost nothing! He picked it up for a few euros on Ebay or at the goodwill. He’s a big fan of vintage. Maybe because he’s a historian?
Already for a while I had this idea sitting in my head that I would paint his world of wonders. So when we were in Berlin over the summer, I took a proper look at the house, at everything. I was even more impressed when I realised how carefully he has picked out his things, how everything fits together, how the colours match.
I feel a lot of love when I step into this space – not the love of shopping, buying and possessing, but the love of beauty and simplicity, for things that get better with the years.
Somewhere I read the quote, “vintage means pre-loved”. Maybe what I’m sensing at Till’s place is the love for things pre-loved!
