It’s show time

Get out that party hat, it’s the silly season.

This painting is part of my Eindhoven calendar project and my second attempt to paint something related to carnival.

For a long time, the statue of the Grandpa Philips before the Eindhoven train station has been my favourite. His face, pose, the long coat and short legs – I think it is the most adorable statue in the city.

When Eindhoven does carnival, the entire city joins in the big celebration. Also, in Eindhoven, carnival is more about the spirit. You don’t need to spend a lot of effort on a fancy costume. Just a little funny outfit is okay. It’s more about drinking beer and less about the dress code.

I thought: What if Grandpa Philips also wants to join the carnival, what would he look like?

So, I gave him an orange hat and a bottle of beer. It’s showtime!
