Frida Matisse

My story with the Matisse portrait style continues.

This is part of a series of 10 paintings that I created for an exclusive collaboration with Fy. The theme of the series is contemporary minimalism.

You’ve seen me play around with the Matisse style of portraits before.

Did you know that Frida Kahlo and Henri Matisse were contemporaries?

Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 and died in 1954; Henri Matisse died the same year, but he was much older, born in 1869.

As far as I could tell from what’s written about them, they never met. I wondered what would have happened. Matisse, in his younger years, was a rebel, but his art has always struck me as joyful. Whereas Frida Kahlo’s work feels to me more about projecting intense emotions into the world.

What if Matisse had painted Frida Kahlo?
