Oh Deer Autumn

21 Oct 2020 | Works

You know I love plants, and autumn is a beautiful time of the year, when nature turns into all sorts of hues of red, yellow, brown, orange and gold.

I haven’t painted animals for a while, so I wanted to combine that with a golden orange autumn scene. I picked a Taiwanese deer (the Formosan sika deer, to be exact) whose dotted coat provides great camouflage.

My goal was to create a crazy autumn colour combination, where the deer wouldn’t immediately stand out. You have to look a little closer, and then you see, “oh dear, there’s a deer!”

(My husband’s favourite expression of surprise or if something went wrong is “oh dear”. After years of listening to it, I’ve started to say it too!)
