All is calm, all is bright

The Christmas lights lead you home

This is a Christmas painting obviously. I do one every year. It’s part of my mental preparation for the big holiday.

I think I was still very influenced by my previous artwork (Abstract Jellyfish, my brain could not construct anything complicated. I just saw some colour blocks in my head, and it was so hard for me to create something with more details. It was as if my heart was not in it.

After struggling for a few days, I thought about our own house. Our house is very bohemian, a fancy version of the Muji style. I thought about what kind of Christmas painting I would want in our house: something calm and quiet, slightly warm and delightful. To create quiet and calm, the painting should be very simple.

My original colour test very dark, using Prussian blue, but I changed my mind at the last second and decided I wanted a light background. Christmas is supposed to make you happy, and I didn’t want something dark. So I completely changed the colours and used a white background.

A lighthouse is something that gives people hope. Imagine you’re on a boat, out to sea, and there are light houses in the distance, and the Christmas lights safely lead you back to port!
