California Daydreaming

How do you breathe without a dream?

I have wanted to paint the Southern Magnolia ever since I first time saw it blooming so beautifully in our yard.

It’s not just the elegant, big white flowers, also the refreshing smell and the olive green leaves that always come with a reddish brown color on the other side. When I’m standing underneath and looking up at the tree, it always gives me a certain type of wonderful California life fantasy.

When I checked out the plant on wikipedia, I learned it has very poetic name in Chinese, 荷花玉蘭. To translate it back into English: Lotus on the tree. This gave me the final piece of inspiration for this painting. In Chinese art, a lotus usually gets painted with fish, duck or geese. I decided to paint this “lotus on a tree” with two goldfish swimming around it.

Or were you thinking these are butterflies? Look closer!

BEHIND THE SCENES...

THIS IS WHAT THIS PAINTING COULD LOOK LIKE ON YOUR WALL

Something a bit old, but the ideas are still new
